It is to celebrate the day when the Pied Piper of Hamelin drove out the rat infestation in the town of Hamelin, Germany. Like Easter and Christmas, no one can agree on the precise date. The Brother Grimm noted the tale taking place June 26, 1284 but the poem by Robert Browning cited the date of July 22, 1376. In any case, July 22nd marks the day we commemorate the modern rat catchers or exterminators.
