Spinose Ear Ticks Biting Humans, Horses, Cattle, Dogs & Cats

One of the most common ticks found in the state of Oklahoma is the spinose ear tick. The spinose ear tick is a common pest among horses, cattle and other animals, both wild and domestic. Humans have also been known to be attacked by this species of tick. The tick is found in the ear canals of its host, earning its name, the ear tick. In animals, large number of ear ticks are responsible for severe irritation, inflammation and even deafness of the animal. Cattle that have been infested with the ear tick experience a flop eared condition. If you work in a heavily wooded area or with livestock, be sure to check yourself for ear ticks to avoid any sickness or infection.

Protect Yourself from Ticks & Transmitted Diseases Such as Lyme Disease & Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Ticks are a dangerous insect to come into contact with so it is important to take every precaution to keep you and your family safe. Avoid heavily infested tick areas, especially in the spring and early summer, which we are in the middle of. If you go out hiking or camping, be sure to stay on cleared or prepared trails or paths. Avoid tall grasses or bushy overgrown areas. Also avoid areas that are heavily covered with leaf litter. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid areas that ticks would be attracted to. Remember that ticks can latch onto you from a branch, plant or bush. If you do plan on going into a heavily wooded area or trail, wear light colored clothing so ticks can easily be identified if they latch onto your clothes. Wear long pants and tuck pant legs into boots or high socks. After your outing, be sure to check thoroughly for ticks on yourself and your family members.
